Let's Help Out Oklahoma's Kids!

I watched a TV news report about some High School Graduating students who couldn't attend their graduation ceremonies. Why? Because they didn't have the $35 or so to pay for the rental of the Cap and Gown. Like you, we're busy people. Because of this, we often get out of touch with what's going on around us. This greatly affected me. It's tough enough for kids these days just to make it all the way through school, and then to be dealt an embarassing blow like that.

I've also spoken with teachers and school superintendants about this and other issues. They've all told me that they have limited operating budgets, and will gladly accept any and all donations. Many re-use Caps and Gowns from previous years, and many schools have "silent benefactors" who can donate money and supplies when asked.

From the type of business that Debbie and I run, you can probably guess we value education highly. Any and every kid deserves to become all that he or she can become, and we all need to help them along as best we can. So here's what we are going to start doing:

OnALot.com's School Supplies, Cap and Gown, and School Photo Program

Twice a year, in April and June, we will donate $250 of our money towards buying school supplies, as well as for renting the Cap and Gown for graduation. Here's how we will do this:

In June, we will fund the program for School Supplies to be given out in July before school starts.

In April, we will fund the program for those who can't afford a cap and gown, or need money for school graduation pictures.

Please send along a check made out to HDR, PO Box 1013, Henryetta, OK 74437 for any amount you can spare. We can also take your credit / debit card if you like, or you can donate to our admin@onalot.com PayPal account.. And please include a note that this is a donation for the School Supplies Program (and not to pay your internet bill) Also, we want to keep this simple. We won't be issuing receipts for tax purposes, and we won't be declaring this money ourselves.

We will keep a fund tally going on the right hand side of our front page.

Update 11/5/09 - We donated $60 to the Weleetka School System to help 3 kids get their school pictures done.

Any money left over will be rolled into the next "round" for the kids.
